Tomorrow class 5 are making all different types of foods one group have made sponge cakes another group are making ginger breads and the other group are making welsh cakes.

Global Gourmet - Making Bread

This week the children have been designing and making bread after tasting a variety of bread from around the world. The children decided whether to make their bread savoury or sweet and had a variety of ingredients to choose from. The children also designed the shape of their bread. We had a lots of interesting designs including hedgehogs, snakes, birds, hearts and even Harry Styles! 

We remembered to use bakers hands to avoid any unwanted germs getting on our hands after we had washed them. 

The children enjoyed getting the their hands in the bowl to bring all of the ingredients together to make the dough. The children kneaded and shaped their dough according to their design, once the bread was cooked it was left to cool. Finally they decorated their bread and then got to have a taste.

The children worked incredibly hard this week both in their national tests and bread making. I am proud of all of you! Well done class 5! 

Global Gourmet - Trip to Frankie and Benny's

As a part of our new topic 'Global Gourmet' Class 4 and 5 went to the American Italian restaurant Frankie and Benny's. The children were told a story about the origins of the restaurant, that in 1924, at the age of 10, Frankie left Sicily with his parents and moved to “Little Italy" in New York. Within a year of moving the family had opened a restaurant. Frankie went to the nearby High School and became lifetime friends with Benny, already a third generation American. The business was taken over by Frankie and Benny in 1953, and combines popular American and Italian food. 

The children found out that some of the ingredients that are used in the restaurant are imported from all around the world such as cheesecake from Chicago, breadsticks, bruschetta, gnocchi and pasta from Italy and tomatoes from Argentina. 

The children thoroughly enjoyed making/eating their pizzas and wraps. 

I was proud of all of the children who were very well behaved and polite.They were also very happy with their balloons and VIP cards. 

Book Day

Everyone has made a brilliant effort and the children looked fantastic! Today we have had fun writing about our favourite books while discussing the best parts. 

We also entered a book token competition to try and win new books for our school. First prize is £250 National Book Tokens for the school, £100 of tokens for the winning entry and £100 of tokens for the winning class. Plus the winner could see their design turned into a real National Book Token and it will be distributed to bookshops. Here is a lovely selection, wish us luck :). 

The children also enjoyed reading quietly in our comfy book corner. 

Class 5 had some welcome visitors this afternoon too :). 

Children of the Revolution - Problem Solving

Today in Class 5 the children have worked really hard! They have spent the day doing maths independently as part our innovate week based on our current topic. The children were given a problem that they had to solve which was based on information about a Victorian boy who worked in a coal mine.

 

The children read the information and asked if they could underline/highlight key facts. They then planned what they were going to do, thinking about what the question was asking them and what methods they were going to use. 

The children then solved the problem by writing their method showing each step of their process. It was interesting to see how each group/pair solved the problem, as quite a few the children went about it in a different way.

The children then had to check their answer by reviewing their process. A lot of the children knew to inverse their process to check their answer. Some children went on to check further by using another method. 

To end the day the children shared what they had done with the class explaining their process on the board.

William Morris - Artwork

We are a very creative bunch in Class 5! After looking at the work of the Victorian interior designer, William Morris, the children produced some observational drawings from wallpaper prints, capturing colour and detail using coloured pencils. 

For our Eisteddfod this week the children have also produced some beautiful daffodil paintings inspired by William Morris! They have enjoyed experimenting with watercolour paints and have produced some fantastic paintings. Well done!
